As editor of The Berkhamstedian, ARC Bolton had received a letter and photograph from George Pearkes, who was in France at the time. This scrap of graph paper is dated and titled In the Field, March 6.
A part of the letter reads as follows -
To A.R.C.Bolton,
Your letter of Feb.19th received today. I should consider it a great honour to have my photo printed in The Berkhamstedian, as I am still very fond and proud of the Old School. I am more than glad that any small action on my part has added anything to the glorious record of the school…………………….
Yours truly,
G.R.Pearkes.
(Pearkes ‘small action’ resulted in him being awarded the Victoria Cross).
The top photograph is Lieut.Col. Pearkes V.C., printed in the July 1918 issue of school magazine. The second photograph shows Pearkes, seated centre front as a member of the Cross Country team, 1906.
