The Pearkes sword was presented to Berkhamsted school's O.T.C. in December 1919 by Old Berkhamstedian Lt.Col. G R Pearkes VC, DSO, MC.

Originally known as the Pearkes Challenge Sword, it was awarded annually at the General Inspection to the platoon judged best during the year's training. As the Corps has evolved, so too have the honours and awards and today the Pearkes Sword is presented to the Most Outstanding Cadet of the Year.

An idea for a memento of the occasion resulted in the little presentation card which gives a history of the sword and a brief description of the act of bravery and leadership, that led to the Victoria Cross being awarded to George Randolph Pearkes, in 1918. An additional memento, a miniature sword lapel pin was also introduced and the two were first given at the 2018 ceremony.
