Stones of Palestine
When you next visit the School Chapel at Castle, take a moment to look at this artefact, on display since 1895. It sits on the wall to the right of the gallery staircase.
Entitled ‘Stones of Palestine’ it consists of a wooden case with twenty one stones, which were collected by Julia Fry, wife of Dr Fry (Headmaster 1888-1911.) The brass plaque underneath, is etched with a numbered cross and text, which acts as a guide to the places from where the stones were gathered……… Nazareth, Jacob’s Well, Gethsemane, Mount Tabor and Shiloh to name a few.
The following is written along the bottom of the brass plaque - “For we believe thy footsteps trod these streets and plains, Thou Son of God”
